Jonas Vingegaard sits second in the general classification ahead of the final stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné, 1:01 behind Pogačar, but still remains up for the fight, and believes that his shape will improve towards the Tour de France in July.
Jonas Vingegaard remains optimistic ahead of the final stage of the 2025 Critérium du Dauphiné, while acknowledging he still has room for improvement before the Tour de France. The Dane sits 1:01 seconds behind race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who has looked a level above the rest at this Dauphiné on the two previous stages. When asked about Visma | Lease a Bike's strategy for the final day, Vingegaard kept his cards close to his chest.
"I'm not going to tell our plan here. So I guess you'll see what our plan will be and yeah, today is the last day, everything is still to fight for. So we will do our best," Vingegaard said.
Despite the time gap of 1:01, the two-time Tour de France champion hasn't given up on overall victory at the traditional Tour warm-up race. "Of course, it would be nice to take the overall victory here, so I mean the race is not finished, and we have to do everything we can," he added.
When questioned about his rival's impressive form throughout the spring campaign and whether Pogačar might be peaking too early for the Tour, Vingegaard was dismissive of any concerns. "No, I think Tadej will be very good in the Tour, so I expect him to be at his best there. I don't expect him to get any worse," he stated.
Vingegaard revealed that he was pleased with his performance numbers from yesterday's stage but believes he still has more to give before July's main objective. "Yesterday was very good, but I do still think that I can get better. I can't put a number on it, but I'm pretty sure I can get better," Vingegaard said.
Whilst the Tour de France remains the primary objective for both Pogačar and Vingegaard, the Dane also addressed the challenge of maintaining top form across multiple Grand Tours in a season as he spoke about La Vuelta.
"When you go for the Tour, maybe it's more the question for La Vuelta, if you do that. But, at least for myself, I'm pretty sure that I can do a good Tour de France, then it's more about what you can do in the Vuelta a España afterwards," he explained.
