Pogacar falls just short of Bjarne Riis’ 1996 Hautacam record
Tadej Pogačar claimed victory on stage 12 of the Tour de France, finishing the 13.5km climb to Hautacam in 35:08 - a very impressive ride, though just shy of Bjarne Riis’ record.

The Tour first visited Hautacam in 1994, when Miguel Indurain broke the race apart on the climb, though Luc Leblanc came around the yellow jersey to claim the stage win.
Two years later, Bjarne Riis set the seemingly unbreakable record for Hautacam, winning in the yellow jersey in a time of 34:40 after an astonishing series of attack. The Dane later confessed to doping with EPO en route to victory at that year's Tour.
On a rainy day in 2000, Lance Armstrong was quickest on the climb en route to second place on the stage behind the late Javier Otxoa. He moved into the yellow jersey but didn't trouble Riis' record. Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour wins after he received a life ban for doping in 2012.
Saunier Duval duo Leonardo Piepoli and Juan Jose Cobo were first to the top in 2008. Piepoli was later stripped of stage victory after testing positive for CERA, while Saunier Duval - managed by Mauro Gianetti and Matxin Joxean Fernández - were kicked out of that Tour when Riccardo Riccò tested positive for CERA.
Vincenzo Nibali won atop Hautacam in a time of 37:21 en route to overall victory in 2014. In 2022, Jonas Vingegaard dropped Tadej Pogacar on Hautacam after a turn from teammate Wout van Aert, and the Dane clocked a winning time of 36:34 on the 13.5km ascent.
