'The Tour humbles you' - Jorgenson proud after positive time trial

The American rider reflected on a much-improved performance for both himself and Visma | Lease a Bike leader Jonas Vingegaard in the stage 13 individual time trial at the Tour de France.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike) delivered a strong ride on the stage 13 individual time trial at the Tour de France, finishing 6th, 2:02 behind Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), and rebounding after what he described as "a really bad day" in the previous stage to Hautacam on Thursday.

"I wanted to test myself and also get myself back in the fight after yesterday. I was disappointed last night, it felt like in some ways I gave up and just had a really bad day," reflected Jorgenson to reporters after finishing his effort. "I'm not a robot and I have bad days," he added.

The American opted for a road bike rather than a time trial setup, a decision which was based on personal comfort rather than course reconnaissance.

"I can't speak too much on the recon because I didn't do any, but yeah, it was pretty straightforward, the bike choice was on personal feeling," Jorgenson said.

"If you had glutes of steel, you could stay in the TT position, which some guys were able to do impressively, but personally, I felt much better on the road bike."

After a disappointing stage 12 for Visma | Lease a Bike, there were plenty of positives to take despite Pogačar's continuous dominance, and Jorgenson was pleased with his performance on a personal note.

"I was at least back to a level I can be proud of today, I think the Tour puts you in your place and humbles you," Jorgenson said.

Jorgenson also reflected positively on the performance of his team leader, Jonas Vingegaard, who also had a very strong showing, finishing 36 seconds behind Pogačar and 44 seconds ahead of Primož Roglič (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) in third.

“Yeah, Jonas was super strong, I’m proud of his fight, I watched the last couple of kilometres and it was exciting television, so for sure, look, we’re doing our best in the race and I’m really proud of how we raced so far and don’t think we should be disappointed at all," said Jorgenson after a combative showing from Visma and Vingegaard so far at this Tour de France.

"There’s nothing that you can do if you give your best and fight every day," he added, to a post-race interview that had a much more positive tone than the sombre one from Thursday.
