Tour de France - the gap between the GC favourites after stage 5 time trial
Tadej Pogacar is back in yellow, as Remco Evenepoel won stage 5, but who is where after the stage against the clock?

'The race of truth' has painted a clearer picture of the general classification, with former race leader Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) the only rider that stands out as a certainty to drop out of the top 10.
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) is the new leader of the Tour de France after finishing a strong second in the individual time trial on stage 5, whilst the stage winner, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), has jumped up into second in the general classification, closing the gap on Pogačar to 42 seconds. The big loser on the day was Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike), who, although only slipping one place in the standings to 4th, shipped over 1 minute to both Evenepoel and Pogačar and is now 1:13 away from the yellow jersey on the shoulders of the Slovenian.
In his place on the podium steps, one of the early stars of the 2025 edition, local hero, Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), who finished 5th on the stage, and now sits just shy of a minute at 59 seconds behind Pogačar.
It was a successful day for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe in terms of GC positions, as Primož Roglič moved up 5 places from 13th to 8th, whilst Florian Lipowtiz was a big mover, leaping from 20th to 9th, although Roglič continued to fall further away from the podium in terms of time, now 1:31 behind Vauquelin.
Mathieu van der Poel bid farewell to yellow despite a valiant fight, and now sits in 6th at 1:28, sandwiched by the superdomestiques that are Matteo Jorgenson (Visma | Lease a Bike), 5th at 1:22, and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), 7th at 1:53.
Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) continues to round out the top 10 at 2:32, whilst Oscar Onley (Picnic PostNL) slipped to 11th at 2:41, and Enric Mas (Movistar), in a discipline which is more of a foe than a friend, dropped from 6th to 13th at 3:29.
