Vuelta a España 2025: standings after stage 1 - Philipsen romps to red jersey
Jasper Philipsen claimed his fourth Vuelta stage win, four years after his last victory at the Spanish Grand Tour in 2021.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España, finishing comfortably ahead of Ethan Vernon (Israel-Premier Tech) and Orluis Aular (Movistar).
Courtesy of the time bonuses, Philipsen leads the general classification by 4 seconds over Vernon in 2nd, and the same margin over Aular and Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal-QuickStep) tied in 3rd, with the latter gaining bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint.
Philipsen is also the leader of the points classification courtesy of his stage win with a tally of 50, with Vernon sitting in 2nd on 30, and Reinderink 3rd on 20.
For his efforts in the day's breakaway, Alessandro Verre (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) leads the mountains classification on 3 points, one ahead of Joel Nicolau (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), and two ahead of Nicolas Vinokurov (XDS Astana)
Vernon also leads the youth standings, whilst Tom Pidcock's Q36.5 squad leads the team standings.
