'When I entered the Tour there was no focus on the GC' - Onley looks back on the Tour

After finishing in a spectacular 4th place in the general classification at the 2025 Tour de France, Oscar Onley (Picnic PostNL) went onto the Watts Occurring podcast to discuss the experience of competing in the upper echelons of the general classification is like at 22-years old.

Onley and his Picnic PostNL team actually arrived at the Tour with no expectations regarding the general classification with Onley stating on the podcast, "When I entered the Tour, there was no focus on the GC, I knew that the first week would suit me very well. I was able to ride results from the peloton, and I couldn't afford to lose time during the difficult days.'

"When we got to the time trial, I was in a good position," said Onley who found himself in 7th place in the GC after some battling, hard fought stages. "I was told that I just had to go full throttle and see where we would end up.' After the time trial on stage 5, Onley lost a bit of bit of ground, which he made up shortly afterwards.

After a strong climbing performance at the Tour de Suisse, Onley said regarding his GC aspirations as a rider "After the Tour de Suisse it changed a bit, because I showed there that I was climbing quite well, But we looked at it day by day. I had never done such long cols before, especially not with riders of that level. I expected to break completely, but I was still in good shape so I didn't have much stress about it. I would then get opportunities in the breakaway."

Onley also coped well when the going went tough in the race situations, most notably, the stage with the summit finish to the Col de la Loze where Onley found himself distanced. Regarding that incident Onley stated "There were a few points in that stage that I thought the top 5, top 6 were slipping away from me, especially with Felix [Gall] in the breakaway. I had no teammates and was surrounded by three men from Visma | Lease a Bike and three men from UAE Team Emirates. Me and [Tobias] Johannessen were sitting there, and there was nothing we could do."

After the iconic Col de la Madeleine was summited Matt Winston, Onley DS at Picnic PostNL gave him encouragement, "He told me that the men were coming back. I think he passed on time differences that were a bit smaller than they really were, to give me courage. But when they came back, they pulled hard to get me back to the front of the race. On the last climb, the race unfolded in a different way."

Regarding the remainder of the 2025 season, Onley has his sights set on some potential glory in Rwanda, stating "That's the really big goal for the end of the season. That's also why I'm in Andorra now, at about the same height as the race [Rwanda]. Hopefully that will give some advantages, because not everyone can do that now. With good preparation, I can take a step up from last year."

Now that would be quite the moment for Oscar Onley as the young Scotsman continues to shine in the limelight.
