World Championships drama ends with concussion and apology by Norbert Riberolle
Marion Norbert Riberolle’s World Championships ended in disqualification and a hospital visit after a flashpoint incident during the elite women’s race at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Hulst. On Sunday, her team confirmed she sustained a concussion, and Riberolle later addressed the episode with an apology.

The Belgian champion was in the thick of the fight for the final podium spot when she went down in the penultimate lap after contact with Kristýna Zemanová. Television footage showed Zemanová attempting a pass on the inside through a left hand turn after a drop, sliding out and taking Norbert Riberolle with her. As Zemanová tried to restart quickly, Norbert Riberolle confronted her and pushed her in the chest.
Race officials reacted swiftly and disqualified the 27-year-old Norbert Riberolle for her response.
When she came into the pits for a bike change, officials could be seen trying to stop her, but she rode on. Later, she was visibly distressed when the disqualification became clear and required medical attention. Sporza reported that she was taken to hospital for additional check ups, with neck pain cited alongside concerns that she suffered a panic attack.
The incident unfolded behind the decisive battle for the rainbow jersey, which was ultimately controlled by Lucinda Brand. Brand rode clear in the closing laps to secure her second elite world title, finishing 27 seconds ahead of Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado. Puck Pieterse completed an all Dutch podium after recovering from a heavy crash earlier in the race to claim bronze.
For Norbert Riberolle, who rides for Fenix-Premier Tech, the disqualification brought a frustrating end to what had been a strong ride on a demanding course. After a difficult start, she was among the fastest riders in the race and had worked her way back into contention for a medal when the clash occurred.
Zemanová, whose own chances were damaged by the fall, still managed to finish just outside the top ten.
A day later, on Sunday, her team Crelan Corendon provided a medical update. “After her crash at the World Championships, Marion sustained a concussion. The medical examinations were reassuring. Apart from mild headaches, there are currently no further symptoms. Marion’s participation in the Exact Cross in Maldegem does not appear to be in jeopardy,” the team said on Instagram.
Riberolle also responded via her own Instagram account. “Everything is fine with my health, apart from the headache. As for my disqualification, my action was not correct. I accept the jury’s decision and I apologise to the other rider,” the Belgian said.
