Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) claimed victory in a crash-marred stage 3 of the Tour de France, narrowly beating Jonathan Milan in a tense sprint finish in Dunkerque. The day was overshadowed by the heavy crash and abandonment of green jersey Jasper Philipsen, while Remco Evenepoel also went down in the final kilometres.

But if the wind picks up near Dunkirk, echelons could form and chaos might follow - just as race director Christian Prudhomme hopes.
