Quinn Simmons claimed a solo victory on stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse after attacking from the day’s break with 20km to go. The American held off a chasing peloton to win in Heiden, dedicating the victory to the late Gino Mäder. João Almeida and Oscar Onley rounded out the top three, while race leader Romain Gregoire finished fourth to retain yellow. Geraint Thomas crashed and lost significant time, finishing over 15 minutes down.
Stage 3 is the hilliest of the opening days, with nearly 3,000 metres of climbing over 195.6km. Starting again in Aarau, the lumpy route features several taxing climbs, including a 5.2km ascent at 6% with 14km to go, followed by two more uphill sections to the line in Heiden.
It’s a day for puncheurs and GC riders to test each other. While it won’t decide the race, anyone not on form risks losing time.
