Jasper Philipsen claimed the opening stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España in Novara, powering to victory in the bunch sprint to take the first red jersey. The Belgian’s triumph marked a rapid comeback from the broken collarbone he suffered at the Tour de France. Ethan Vernon and Orluis Aular completed the podium, while Mads Pedersen failed to feature in the sprint.

For the sixth time in history, the Vuelta a España will begin abroad - this time with a flat opener in Italy’s Piemonte region. The 183km stage from Turin to Novara is expected to end in a bunch sprint, with the red jersey on the line. It’s only the third linear road stage start this century, and the second longest day of the race.
