Jay Vine claimed the first mountain stage of the Vuelta with a powerful solo from the breakaway. Torstein Træen finished second and took over the red leader’s jersey from Jonas Vingegaard. The GC favourites traded attacks but no gaps opened. Juan Ayuso, however, cracked and lost more than eleven minutes.

What we said beforehand

Stage 6 marks the first true mountain test of the Vuelta, as the peloton crosses into the Pyrenees on Spanish and Andorran roads. With three major climb, including the summit finish to Pal.Andorra, the GC contenders are expected to show their hand. It’s a day for the pure climbers, and one that could offer the first real glimpse of the final podium.
