Stage 9 Vuelta a España 2025

31.08

Jonas Vingegaard won stage 9 of the Vuelta a España with a solo attack on Valdezcaray, cutting his deficit to leader Torstein Træen to 37 seconds. João Almeida and Tom Pidcock finished 24 seconds behind, while Giulio Ciccone and Egan Bernal lost time. After a strong display from Visma | Lease a Bike, the Dane reaffirmed his status as the overall favourite.

What we said beforehand

Stage 9 of the Vuelta finishes atop Valdezcaray for the first time since 2021, capping off a long and punishing day with over 3,200 metres of climbing. Though the stage features just one categorised ascent, the constant undulations will test the GC riders before the first rest day. The final climb is steady rather than steep, making big time gaps unlikely, but positioning and fatigue could still shape the standings.
