The mixed relay is one of the newer events at the World Championships. Each nation lines up with three men and three women, with the men starting first before handing over to the women. It is effectively a team time trial split into two parts, with the final result decided by the combined performance of both groups.
When was the World Championship Mixed Relay first held?
The mixed relay made its World Championship debut in 2019 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. The Netherlands became the first world champions, beating Germany by 22 seconds with Great Britain taking bronze. The event replaced the trade team time trial and introduced a new format in which men and women compete together for the same world title.
Which country has won the most World Championship Mixed Relay titles?
Through the 2025 edition, Switzerland and Australia share the record with two victories each. Switzerland won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023, becoming the first nation to successfully defend the rainbow jerseys. Australia then repeated the feat by winning in 2024 and retaining the title in Kigali in 2025.
