Who has won the Giro d'Italia the most times?

Three riders hold the record for most Giro d’Italia victories with five editions each. Alfredo Binda was the first to accomplish the feat in 1935, and was joined post-war by Fausto Coppi, who won five editions across a thirteen-year period.

Eddy Merckx became the first non-Italian rider to win the Giro five times, doing so in the quickest time frame yet, from 1968 to 1974. Merckx remains the most recent rider to accomplish the feat, with five riders tied on three victories, including Gino Bartali, Giovanni Brunero, Felice Gimondi, Fiorenzo Magni and Bernard Hinault.

Belgium are the next most successful nation in terms of winning the Giro, securing the GC seven times, five via Eddy Merckx.

In total, riders from seventeen different nations have won the Giro d’Italia across 108 editions as of 2025.

Italy have also secured the most stage wins with 1,296 in total ahead of the 2026 edition. Belgium sit second in the rankings with 170, and Spain is the only other nation to have won over 100, with a total of 116.
