Johannessen's brutal effort: the numbers behind 4th on Hautacam
After an super strong performance on stage 12 of the Tour de France, Tobias Halland Johannessen was one of the big winners in the days after finishing 4th. Let's break down the power files of the Norwegian

We saw a remarkable stage today. On the data front, we’re also very fortunate to have access to the power data of the rider who finished fourth atop Hautacam on stage 12, Tobias Halland Johannessen (62kg). A huge thanks to him for sharing, and let's dive into the numbers!
The run-in to the first climb of the day was not too tough, due to its flat nature. Johannessen put out 240 watts for 2 hours and 30 minutes here, equating to almost 4W/kg. On the first major climb of the day, the Col du Soulor, he put out 6W/kg for 34 minutes, an already infernal pace. After a short descent, the Col des Bordères followed, where Johannessen maintained that same 6W/kg output for 9 minutes.
But the apotheosis was still to come: Hautacam. Johannessen delivered 6W/kg, this time for a gruelling 38 minutes and 38 seconds, beating Oscar Onley (Picnic PostNL) in the sprint for 4th on the stage with 765 watts for the last 14 seconds. Johannessen's efforts, combined under the scorching 40°C heat on a summer's day in the Pyrenees, made for an even more impressive performance.
A crazy performance for Tobias once again. It is so great to see that he can finally show his level, after lots of injuries, with the Norwegian even thinking of quitting pro cycling at times. After winning Tour de l’Avenir in 2021 and turning pro the year after, Tobias has battled persistent knee injuries, which plagued him even this season, but it's obviously not holding him back anymore based on his current form, which is great to see.
