The 2027 Giro d'Italia will start in Trieste, with two stages in the northeast of Italy, before returning to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region for a finish on Monte Zoncolan on stage 20.

Trieste was due to host the Grande Partenza of the 2025 Giro but lost out to Albania. Urbano Cairo, the owner of RCS Media Group and race organiser RCS Sport, confirmed recent reports of a deal with Friuli-Venezia Giulia region for 2027 while speaking at the Festival dello Sport at the weekend.

The 2027 Corsa Rosa is likely to again finish in Rome but a near €10 million deal with Friuli-Venezia Giulia means three stages will be held in the northeast of Italy, near the Slovenian and Austrian borders.

According to journalist Antonio Simeoli of Il Messaggero Veneto, stage 1 of the 2027 Giro will start and finish in Trieste with a loop into Slovenia that will suit the sprinters. Stage 2 will finish in Pordenone, the Italian capital of culture in 2027.

The 2027 Giro is expected to head south via the Adriatic coast and then cross to Naples via the Apeninines, before turning north along the Tyrenian coast, Tuscany, Liguria and Piemonte.

According to Tuttobiciweb, A stage will also climb the Gavia and Mortirolo, with a key hilly time trial to Vicenza, before the race returns to Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Stage 20 is likely to start in Lienz, Austria, before climbing Monte Zoncolan from the Ovaro side. This climb was last raced in the Giro in 2018, when Chris Froome won alone and went on to win the maglia rosa a week later.

The Grande Partenza in Trieste could be officially presented on Monday October 12, with the full route of the 2027 Giro slated to be revealed in Rome on November 3.
