A battle for every UCI ranking point - How the final races of 2026 can decide the 2027 Grand Tour wild card teams
Unibet and TotalEnergies locked in close battle for a possible Tour invitation, as Euskaltel and Bardiani fight for a place in top 30 and Grand Tour survival.

The final races of the 2026 road racing calendar have become a battle for every UCI ranking point, with ProTeam teams locked in a battle for the 2027 Grand Tour wild card places.
The 2026 race calendar officially ends on Sunday October 18, with the UCI publishing their final ranking on Monday.
The 18 WorldTour teams are automatically invited to all the WorldTour races, the three best-ranked ProTeams of 2026 will also secure invitations to the 2027 WorldTour races, with the Grand Tour organisers allowed to award two other discretionary wild card places.
A wild card invitation to the Tour de France is pro cycling's equivalent of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory gold ticket. Tour organiser ASO gave wild cards to TotalEnergies and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA this year, snubbing Unibet Rose Rockets, who instead rode the Giro d'Italia.
Unibet want to ride the Tour in 2027 but know they can't hope for any gifts from ASO. Pinarello, Tudor and Cofidis have scored enough points to secure the three-best ProTeam slots for 2027 but behind them Unibet and TotalEnergies are fighting for every point because there is a chance to join them.
Picnic PostNL slumped to 29th in the 2026 team ranking and are reportedly facing serious funding issues as well as questions about their team culture. The UCI could decide not to give Picnic a WorldTour licence and that could see Pinarello-Q36.5 promoted to the WorldTour. The final ProTeam automatic invitation would then go to whoever ranks higher between Unibet and TotalEnergies, their future apparently secure for 2027.
The specialist result databases have slightly different points totals due to the many races and complex points penalties during races but TotalEnergies are slightly ahead of Unibet going into the final weekend of racing. FirstCycling shows TotalEnergies with 7111 points and Unibet on 7053. Both teams are racing at the Eneco Tour and the Chrono des Nations, with TotalEnergies even sending a team to the Japan Cup.
Unibet's Wessel Mouris and Tomáš Kopecký are currently second and fourth in the Eneco Tour general classification and if they can hold that position until Sunday, their points could lift them above TotalEnergies. However it will be a battle for every point on the final day of racing.
A fight for 30th place and wild card status
There is an equally intense battle just to qualify for the 2027 Grand Tour wild card places, with the 30-team threshold creating a battle between MBH Bank Ballan Telecom Fort, Bardiani-CSF and Euskaltel-Euskadi, with Picnic's future status also a factor.
Euskaltel have signed Mikel Landa and hope to ride the 2027 Vuelta a España, while Bardiani want to again ride the Giro d'Italia to justify their existence to sponsors.
According to FirstCycling, MBH are ranked 29th and seem safely in the top 30 but Picnic are 30th and Bardiani are 31st with 2664 points. Euskaltel were 31st with 2657 points, seven less than their Italian rivals. PCS have different points total with Euskaltel ahead of Bardiani by 64 points.
Euskaltel secured an invitation to ride the Gran Prix Chiriquí and the two-day Clásica Provincia de Chiriquí in Panama to chase some valuable UCI points. They placed three riders in the top five in the Gran Prix on Friday to score 93 points. That lifted them to 28th place, with a total of 2839 points.
Bardiani are riding the Tour de Serbia and hope to score points in the Veneto Classic but risk missing out on a Grand Tour place in 2027.
Veteran Bardiani team manager Bruno Reverberi again attacked the UCI ranking system as he fears for his team's future.
"It's unbelievable. Instead of awarding the best teams, we've been forced to race all over the world," He said on Italian state television this week, angry that nobody is questioning the points system and ranking.
"How can you call it a true classification if we all don't ride the same races?" he asked.
"What can you do if they don't invite you to a race? One team can ride 100 races, another 30 and another a WorldTour race, all with very different points awarded."
Reveberi suspects rival teams are combining against Bardiani. He tried to appeal against the UCI points system two years ago and may do so again but knows he has little chance of success.
"The national Federations don't count for anything any more, the UCI controls everything. Nobody knows why they invented this classification. But I do: to favour the race organisers," Reverberi said.
