Airtag solves mystery of Unibet Rose Rocket’s twelve stolen bikes

Bas Tietema's Unibet Rose Rockets team narrowly avoided a season-disrupting crisis after an Airtag concealed inside a stolen toolbox guided French police to 12 high-end team bikes valued at nearly €200,000.

Recovered intact from the 12th floor of an apartment complex just two days after being stolen, the equipment was located before thieves could dismantle or repaint the custom frames.

The theft occurred near Poitiers, France, while the Dutch squad was travelling to a series of Spanish one-day races, including the Clásica Castilla y León and Clásica de Ordizia. Thieves smashed a window and forced open the rear doors of the team vehicle, making off with 12 bikes equipped with custom wheelsets, power meters, and bike computers.

Speaking to Dutch outlet AD, team founder Bas Tietema emphasised the vulnerability a cycling squad faces when stripped of its fleet. "When you are a cycling team and you have no bikes left, it becomes a rather difficult story," Tietema said, describing the break-in as one of his biggest nightmares.

Tietema questioned the logic behind stealing distinctive, brightly coloured team bikes featuring unique serial numbers, noting they would be nearly impossible to resell publicly. "Online, we would recognize those bikes immediately, even if they were repainted. You need a specific market for them; you can't just sell them at a market like stolen diamonds."

The breakthrough came less than 48 hours after the break-in, when a tracking device hidden inside a stolen mechanics' toolbox broadcasted a new location signal.

"We had an Airtag in the toolbox, which they had also taken," Tietema told AD. "Suddenly, we saw that it began to move. That gave us a trail and became our salvation. Without that tag, we would have never found the equipment."

French law enforcement tracked the signal to a warehouse containing scattered equipment, including wheelsets and team gear. The investigation then led officers to a nearby residential high-rise, where all 12 bikes were discovered stored intact on the 12th floor.

The presence of additional cycling gear in the warehouse, including a mechanics' toolbox belonging to WorldTour team Soudal Quick-Step, led Tietema to believe the operation was carried out by organised criminals targeting professional cycling logistics.

"This was not a lucky shot," Tietema said. "You don't just put 12 bikes into a car like cash or jewellery. All those bikes were locked into the truck using special quick-releases. Unfastening them takes time and requires technical knowledge of how team trucks are built."

Although police recovered the fleet intact within two days, logistical delays prevented the original bikes from reaching Spain in time for competition. Mechanics worked around the clock to construct backup frames and match each rider's personal fit measurements.

Unibet Rose Rockets successfully made the start line for their scheduled Spanish races on spare gear, though the logistical strain impacted their weekend.

"The backup bikes were good, but assembling them and adjusting every rider's individual setup on short notice required a massive amount of work," Tietema reflected. "We made it to the race, but it was far from ideal."
