Belgian cycling mourns the loss of former champion Jilke Michielsen, aged 19

Belgian cycling is mourning the death of Jilke Michielsen, a former national champion and one of the country’s brightest young talents, who has died at the age of 19 after a long battle with bone cancer.

Michielsen had been regarded as one of the most promising riders of her generation. As a teenager, she built an impressive record across several disciplines, winning Belgian titles on the road, in time trials and on the track. Her talent was clear early on: she had the power for the velodrome, the precision for the clock and the racing instinct needed on the road.

But just as her career appeared to be opening up, her life changed dramatically. What began as severe back pain eventually led to a devastating diagnosis: Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.

For almost three years, Michielsen shared parts of her illness with remarkable openness. She spoke honestly about the physical toll of treatment, the uncertainty of recovery and the emotional weight of seeing a sporting future placed on hold. In 2024, there was a moment of hope when she was declared cancer free. That relief would prove temporary, as the disease returned in early 2025.

From then on, the treatment was no longer aimed at curing the disease, but at holding it back. Michielsen continued to share parts of that reality with unusual honesty.

In one of her last updates, she wrote that she could no longer continue with chemotherapy. Her body had reached its limit. It was a heartbreaking message, but also a clear one from a young woman who had kept fighting for as long as she could.

News of her death was shared through her Instagram account, accompanied by words that had become closely associated with her outlook on life: “Don’t complain, just enjoy.”
