Bike thief blends into race during escape and nearly reaches front group
A police chase in southwestern Poland took a surreal turn when a fleeing suspect rode straight into an active cycling race and, for a brief moment, found himself among the leading riders.

The incident unfolded near Sobótka, where officers were monitoring a local race. Their attention was drawn to a 20-year-old cyclist on a high-end bike, who was known to police from previous incidents.
When officers attempted to stop him, he ignored the signal and accelerated away. Moments later, his escape route led directly onto the race course.
Blending into the peloton, the rider initially avoided detection. But rather than staying at the back, he pushed forward through the field, briefly riding near the front of the race.
“It created a dangerous situation for both the riders and the organisers,” said police spokesperson Anna Nicer in quotes collected by TVP World. “At one point, he was effectively among the leaders.”
The unusual breakaway was short lived. Police quickly closed the gap and detained the suspect after a brief pursuit.
Officers recovered the bicycle, valued at approximately 28,000 złoty, along with equipment discarded during the escape. The bike was returned to its owner, who had reportedly purchased it only two days earlier.
The man now faces theft charges and could receive a prison sentence of up to five years.
