Carapaz nearly crashes before Vuelta time trial after slip on start ramp
Richard Carapaz’s time trial was almost over before it had even begun. Just moments before his start, the Ecuadorian suddenly lost his balance and slipped, only just managing to stay upright.

It made for a remarkable scene on the start ramp. Carapaz appeared to lose his footing completely, but recovered at the very last moment and avoided hitting the ground. Combined with his futuristic time trial helmet, the incident looked even more unusual.
Most importantly, Carapaz did not appear to suffer any consequences from the scare. He was able to start the time trial as planned and showed no obvious signs of discomfort afterwards.
The EF Education-EasyPost rider went on to complete the 32.1 kilometre course, finishing 24th, 1:45 behind stage winner Stefan Küng.
Carapaz will now turn his attention to the final two days of the Vuelta, with the upcoming terrain expected to suit the Ecuadorian far better than Thursday’s race against the clock.
