Chris Froome back on bike after crash but his future remains unclear

Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome has resumed training following his latest injury setback, sharing his relief at being back on the bike. Israel-Premier Tech recently confirmed that he will no longer race for the team in 2026, and retirement looks increasingly likely.

Froome underwent successful surgery on a pericardial rupture and he also sustained a collapsed lung, five broken ribs and a lumbar vertebral fracture in the crash in southern France in September. He faced a period of recovery since the incident, but on Wednesday, Froome took to social media to announce he was back on the bike.

"It's been a tough road back after my latest crash but it feels so good to finally be out here spinning the legs and on the road again," Froome stated on social media.

The 40-year-old, whose contract expires on December 31 with Israel-Premier Tech, has faced numerous setbacks in recent years, with this latest incident adding to a string of crashes that have disrupted his career since his life-threatening accident during a reconnaissance ride at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné.

That crash resulted in multiple fractures and a lengthy rehabilitation process that significantly impacted Froome's competitive performance in subsequent seasons.

Froome joined Israel-Premier Tech (formerly Israel Start-Up Nation) in 2021 after more than a decade with Team Sky/Ineos, but has been able recapture the form that saw him dominate Grand Tours between 2013 and 2018. One of the few glimpses of his better days came in a strong performance on the Alpe d'Huez at the 2022 Tour de France.

"Every setback teaches you something... this one reminded me to slow down, heal & enjoy the simple things in life," Froome stated.

Although Froome has yet to make any pronouncement on the matter, it seems likely that he will retire at the end of his contract with Israel-Premier Tech as he looks forward to what awaits after cycling, which will include establishing a cycling school in Africa.
