David Lappartient runs unopposed for third term as UCI president
The Frenchman will have another four years at head of cycling's governing body. As in 2021, no candidate has emerged to challenge him at the UCI Congress later this year.

David Lappartient will remain as president of the UCI for a third term after no candidate emerged to challenge him in the next election, which was due to take place at the World Championships in Kigali in September.
The Frenchman has been president of the UCI since 2017, when he defeated incumbent Brian Cookson in the election. Lappartient was re-elected unopposed in 2021. The UCI confirmed Lappartient’s imminent third term in a statement on Friday.
“Only David Lappartient, current UCI President, submitted a candidacy for the position,” the UCI said. “His election for a third four-year term will be confirmed without a vote.”
Lappartient ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee earlier this year, losing out to Kirsty Coventry in the race to succeed Thomas Bach. He has been a member of the IOC since 2022.
Prior to his election as UCI president, Lappartient served terms as the head of the French Cycling Federation and the European Cycling Union (UEC). More recently, he combined his role as UCI president with the presidency of the French Olympic Committee, a position he held from May 2023 until June of this year.
Lappartient also maintains a career as a politician in his native France, representing right-wing party Les Républicains. He is currently president of the Morbihan departmental council.
The 2025 UCI Congress will take place in Kigali on September 25 during the first elite road World Championships in Africa.Â
