EF pulls Valgren and Shaw from Giro as a precaution
Michael Valgren and James Shaw will not start stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia, EF Education-EasyPost has confirmed.

The decision has been taken as a precaution after a demanding Giro in which both riders played important roles for the team.
With EF Education-EasyPost already dealing with several injury setbacks this season, the American squad has opted to protect Valgren and Shaw with an eye on recovery and the major objectives still to come this summer.
“Both riders have given a huge amount to the team over the past weeks and we are proud of the way they have raced,” the team said in a statement. “With several riders already sidelined through injury this season, and with Michael and James both essential to our goals this summer, we have made the decision to prioritise their health, recovery, and preparation for the important block of racing ahead."
“We have enormous respect for the Giro and will keep fighting all the way to Rome.”
That important summer block could include the Tour de France, with EF Education-EasyPost’s statement suggesting that both Valgren and Shaw may still be in line for selection. Asked by Feltet about Valgren’s possible Tour involvement, the team responded: “Of course, the Tour squad has not yet been finalised, but he could be a valuable piece.”
Valgren leaves the Giro after delivering the standout moment of EF Education-EasyPost’s race. The Dane claimed his first Grand Tour stage win with a brilliant victory on stage 17 in Andalo, winning from the breakaway after a tactical brilliant ride in the final kilometres.
Valgren had been part of the day’s major breakaway and remained active as the front group splintered on the run toward the finish. After being caught alongside Einer Rubio inside the final three kilometres, he stayed composed as the decisive group came back together. When Damiano Caruso attacked on the final rise, Valgren responded before launching his own move just before the flamme rouge. The hesitation behind was enough for him to hold on and take an impressive stage win.
Shaw has also been active deep into the final week of the race. The British rider was part of the breakaway on stage 18, underlining EF Education-EasyPost’s continued commitment to aggressive racing and stage hunting.
The team will now continue toward Rome without Valgren and Shaw, with two demanding days still remaining in the Giro d’Italia on Friday and Saturday in the Dolomites.
