Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez) climbed to victory on stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie Féminin, 3 seconds ahead of Urška Žigart (AG Insurance-Soudal) and 6 seconds ahead of Yara Kastelijn (Fenix Deceuninck).

Žigart and Chabbey proved to be the strongest climbers and would duke it out for the stage win in a sprint. Žigart led out the sprint, before Chabbey launched a strong acceleration and powered to the stage win

Race leader at the start of the stage, Paula Blasi (UAE Team ADQ), was distanced from the front of the race with just under 8km remaining, fighting valiantly to finish 6th on the stage at 1:12, but ultimately lost the yellow jersey.

Žigart is the new race leader, 8 seconds ahead of Chabbey, and 13 seconds ahead of Kastalijn. Meanwhile, Blasi slips to 4th in the GC at 58 seconds.

How it unfolded

Claire Steels (Movistar) was on the attack before the final climb, but the British rider was caught before the main GC action kicked off.

The front of the race steadily reduced in size to the point where there were fewer than 10 riders at the front of the race, including Paula Blasi (UAE Team ADQ)

With 7.7km to go, Blasi was distanced and had her teammate Erica Magnaldi in support, courtesy of the strong pace set by fellow Spanish rider Mireia Benito (AG Insurance-Soudal), who was pacing for Urška Žigart (AG Insurance-Soudal), who had the most to gain, sitting second in the GC at the start of the day.

Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez), Steffi Häberlin (SD Worx-Protime), and Yara Kastelijn (Fenix Deceuninck) were up front with the AG Insurance-Soudal duo as the gap to the yellow jersey was heading towards 30 seconds with 6km remaining.

With 5.5km remaining, Žigart launched an acceleration as Benito and Häberlin were distanced. Next to be dropped was Kastelijn a few hundred metres later, but the Dutch rider remained within touching distance.

The front duo would battle it out in a sprint, with Chabbey getting the jump on Žigart to take the stage win by a comfortable margin, whilst Kastelijn remained close to finish within sight of the front duo.
