Enric Mas flanked by four debutants in Movistar Tour de France team

Enric Mas will have four Tour de France debutants for company in the Movistar line-up at the Tour de France, which gets under way in Lille on Saturday. There is no place in the team for sprinter Fernando Gaviria.

American Will Barta, Spanish champion Iván Romeo, climbing talent Einer Rubio and 2024 Vuelta a España revelation Pablo Castrillo will all participate in the Tour for the first time.

The squad is completed by Nelson Oliveira, Gregor Mühlberger and Iván García Cortina.

Mas will again lead Movistar’s general classification at the Tour, and he will hope for better than 2024, when he finished a subdued 19th overall in Nice. The Spaniard went on to record the fourth Vuelta podium finish of his career later in the season. His best performance at the Tour remains his fifth place overall in 2020, his first season at Movistar.

Mas showed signs of form in the Spring with third overall at the Volta a Catalunya and second at Itzulia Basque Country, though he was a more low-key presence at the Critérium du Dauphiné, taking seventh overall. His final race before the Tour was the Andorra MoraBanc Clàssica, where he placed third.

Romeo arrives at his Tour debut buoyed by a stage win and a spell in yellow at the Dauphiné and a fine solo victory at the Spanish Championships in Granada. The under-23 time trial world champion will aim to shine in the opening week time trial in Caen.

“Finally, it’s a time trial that suits me well because I haven't had much luck with them lately,” Romeo told AS. “The Dauphiné time trial had a 2km climb at 12%, and then the national championship was a mountain time trial, so they didn’t really suit me. The time trial at the Tour does. It will be a challenge to measure myself against the best there and then look for breakaways.”

The 29-year-old Barta makes his Tour debut after riding the Giro d’Italia in each of the past three seasons. The Idaho man placed a solid 12th overall at the Tour de Suisse in his final race before the Tour.
