Biography of pro cyclist Iván Romeo
Iván Romeo is a versatile young rider who blends time-trial power with aggressive, opportunistic road racing. Able to win stages, contest week-long classifications and ride the Classics, he represents the new generation Movistar has built its future around.
Confident and calculated in his racing, Romeo has risen quickly from junior prospect to one of the most talked-about emerging riders in the peloton.
Early life and rise
Romeo was born in Valladolid and discovered cycling young, joining a local club at the age of ten and following his father, uncle and younger brother into the sport. He shone in the youth ranks and earned a place with the MMR Cycling Academy, where he claimed both Spanish national road race and time-trial titles at junior level in 2021. Strong results at under-23 level, including a stage win at the Tour de l'Avenir and a silver medal at the U23 European road championships in 2023, marked him as a major talent and earned an early move to Movistar.
U23 world title and WorldTour breakthrough
Romeo's standout amateur result came at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, where he won the under-23 individual time-trial world title. He carried that momentum into the WorldTour: in 2025 he took stage wins at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and the Critérium du Dauphiné and soloed to victory in the elite Spanish road race championship, attacking with around 20 kilometres to go for his first senior national title. He opened 2026 strongly, winning a stage and the overall at the Vuelta a Andalucía and adding a stage at O Gran Camiño.
Rider profile: strengths, style, and characteristics
Romeo is a powerful all-rounder built around a strong time trial. That engine makes him dangerous in breakaways, on rolling terrain and against the clock, and gives him the platform to target short stage-race classifications. He races with confidence and tactical maturity beyond his years, and is comfortable taking the initiative rather than waiting for a sprint.
Personal life
A Valladolid native who grew up in a cycling family, Romeo has spoken about wanting to bring fun and personality back to the sport. Off the bike he is an enthusiastic basketball fan and is regarded as one of the more open, engaging young personalities in the peloton.
