Ezra Caudell awake after heavy Philadelphia crash in positive Modern Adventure update
Modern Adventure Pro Cycling has shared an encouraging update on Ezra Caudell, with the 19-year-old now awake and communicating with those around him 11 days after his serious crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic.

Caudell remains in the intensive care unit at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition and continues to receive ECMO support while his lungs recover from the injuries sustained in the crash.
However, the American reached an important milestone on Wednesday when he was successfully brought out of deep sedation and taken off the ventilator, allowing doctors and his family to gain a clearer picture of his neurological condition.
According to Modern Adventure, Caudell has since been able to interact, communicate and recognise those around him.
“Despite the severity of his injuries, and very much consistent with Ezra’s personality, it wasn’t long after waking that he was making jokes and sending short videos to his teammates,” the team said.
“His ability to interact, communicate, and recognize those around him has been an especially welcome and encouraging development.”
Caudell suffered a concussion and severe chest trauma in the crash, which occurred during the Philadelphia Cycling Classic as he attempted to bridge across to the breakaway alongside Lotto Intermarché rider Milan Menten.
He has remained in hospital since the accident, with his condition requiring extensive medical support over the past 11 days.
Modern Adventure said Caudell remains on ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which is supporting his body while his lungs continue to heal.
While the latest signs are positive, the team stressed that Caudell still faces important milestones in his recovery.
“Ezra’s family remains at his bedside, vigilant and hopeful,” Modern Adventure said. “He is very much on the minds of his teammates and staff at Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, as well as friends and supporters throughout the cycling community.”
The team also thanked those who have sent messages of support to Caudell and his family since the accident.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support for Ezra and his family, and for the continued respect for their privacy during this difficult time.”
“Important milestones still lie ahead. But after an extraordinarily difficult 11 days, there is genuine reason for hope as he begins his road to recovery.”
Caudell is regarded as one of the leading young American road prospects. The Georgia native finished fourth in the under 23 road race at the US national championships earlier this season before placing seventh in the elite race the following day.
He has also raced extensively in Europe with Modern Adventure Pro Cycling in 2026, becoming the youngest rider on the start list at Paris Roubaix in April before later competing at the Arctic Race of Norway and Tour of Denmark.
