Ezra Caudell discharged from hospital 31 days after Philadelphia crash, making 'tremendous strides'
The Modern Adventure rider has made 'tremendous strides' since suffering serious injuries in the Philadelphia Cycling Classic crash.

Ezra Caudell (Modern Adventure) has been discharged from the hospital 31 days after he suffered serious injuries in a crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic on 30 August.
In a statement released on 6 October, Modern Adventure Pro Cycling confirmed that the 20-year-old American was discharged from the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital late last week.
“He will now begin an intensive phase of inpatient rehabilitation at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, followed by planned outpatient rehabilitation in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia,” Modern Adventure said in the statement.
Caudell suffered a concussion and severe chest trauma in the crash as he attempted to bridge across to the breakaway alongside Milan Menten (Lotto-Intermarché).
He was initially placed in intensive care and required ECMO support while his lungs healed. On 9 September, he was taken off deep sedation and the ventilator, allowing doctors to assess his neurological condition.
The team have confirmed that Caudell has made “tremendous strides” towards recovery.
“Prior to discharge, he was walking the halls of the hospital, and his medical team expects both his lung contusions and his fractures to continue healing without the need for further intervention,” said Modern Adventure.
“Just as encouraging has been his neurologic recovery. Ezra continues to show significant improvement from the injury to his brain, with progress in his strength, cognition, communication, and independence each day."
"His recovery will take time, but his progress over the past month has been remarkable, and to see him now walking, interacting with those around him, and moving on to rehabilitation represents an enormous milestone.”
Modern Adventure added that Caudell’s family and the team “have every confidence in him” as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process.
“The drive, work ethic, resilience, and attitude that propelled him to the highest levels of his sport will undoubtedly serve him well on the road ahead.”
