Finlay Tarling dies aged 19 after crash at Volta a Portugal
The Welsh rider and younger brother of former European time trial champion Joshua Tarling, was killed in a crash on stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal. The stage was suspended immediately after the incident.

Finlay Tarling has died from injuries he sustained in a crash on stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal. He was 19 years old.
According to a report from Portuguese broadcaster RTP, Finlay was struck by a motorist who had entered the route and driven against the direction of the race. The incident reportedly took place approximately 20km from the finish in Fafe. The race organisation has not yet confirmed the circumstances of the crash.
The stage was suspended immediately after the crash, with the peloton soft-pedalling towards the finish line. Tarling was treated at the scene of the accident and pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
“The organisers of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regret to announce the death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, of the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident during the 8th stage of the race, between Melgaço and Fafe,” read a statement from the Portuguese Cycling Federation.
“At this time of deep sorrow, the organisers of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation extend their deepest condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his team-mates, the NSN Development Team and all his friends and loved ones.”
“In light of this tragic event, the race will be neutralised until the finish in Fafe and, as a mark of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony scheduled for today will not take place. The organisers will provide further information as soon as circumstances allow.”
A native of Ffos-y-ffin in Wales, Tarling hailed from a cycling family, and he was aiming to follow in the wheel tracks of his older brother, the Netcompany-Ineos rider Josh Tarling.
Finlay Tarling impressed on road and track as a junior, and he signed a two-year deal with Israel Premier Tech Academy (now NSN) ahead of the 2025 season.
The Welshman raced with the NSN WorldTour team on a number of occasions this season, including at O Gran Camiño and Boucles de la Mayenne, and he placed third in the under-23 time trial at the British Championships in June.
