What to expect from the 2026 Tour de France?

Tadej Pogačar enters the 2026 Tour de France as the favourite having won the previous two editions. The World Champion is bidding to join an exclusive club of riders who have won the Tour a record five times.

Jonas Vingegaard emerges as the primary challenger following his Giro d'Italia victory. The 2022 and 2023 champion has had to settle for second behind Pogačar in recent editions, but is looking to become the first man since the Slovenian to complete the Giro-Tour double.

The gruelling route of the 2026 Tour de France covers 3,333 kilometres and features a massive total elevation gain of 54,450 metres. Over the course of 21 stages, the riders will face a highly diverse and punishing terrain:

  • 7 flat stages designed for the pure sprinters.
  • 4 hilly stages perfectly suited to puncheurs and breakaway specialists.
  • 8 mountain stages to test the general classification contenders.
  • 5 mountain finishes located at Gavarnie-Gèdre, Plateau de Solaison, Orcières-Merlette and Alpe d’Huez on two separate occasions.
  • 1 team time trial and 1 individual time trial to shake up the standings.
