The Puerto de El Duque then follows with 31.4 kilometres remaining, climbing for 7.4 kilometres at an average of 8.3 percent.

The decisive challenge comes at Collado del Alguacil, a climb making its first appearance as a Vuelta finish. The final ascent is 8.3 kilometres long at an average gradient of 9.8 percent and takes the riders to an altitude of 1,884 metres. 

With only the hilly stage into Granada still to come on Sunday, this represents the final major opportunity for the general classification contenders to change the outcome of the race.

Eddie Dunbar won stage 19 at Peñas Blancas after catching Santiago Buitrago on the final climb and finishing 14 seconds ahead of the Colombian. The main general classification contenders finished together, meaning Enric Mas retains the red jersey with a 1 minute and 37 second advantage over Primož Roglič. Felix Gall remains third overall at 3 minutes and 1 second, with Richard Carapaz fourth at 5 minutes and 17 seconds.

The neutralised start in La Calahorra is scheduled for 12:30 CEST, with the official start at approximately 12:36. The first riders are expected to reach the summit finish at Collado del Alguacil at around 17:16.
