The fan, a French boy named Adam, went viral during the Tour de France after becoming emotional over Vingegaard's exit from the race. Speaking to France Télévisions, he explained that he feared he might have seen his favourite rider race for the final time.

Those images eventually reached Vingegaard himself.

“Hi Adam, I saw you on television and I'm really happy to have your full support,” Vingegaard said in a video shared by France Télévisions. “It means a lot to me, and don't worry, I'm not going to stop cycling.”

The 29-year-old Dane also had another surprise for Adam. The two-time Tour de France winner sent him a signed Visma | Lease a Bike jersey, while the team invited the youngster to visit them during the 2027 Tour de France.

It was a touching response to a difficult summer for Vingegaard, whose own Tour ended abruptly on stage 15.

The Dane crashed heavily in the closing kilometres of the stage after misjudging a corner and hitting the kerb. He suffered a fractured right collarbone and was forced to abandon the race while sitting second overall, 4:30 behind Tadej Pogačar.

The injury ultimately brought Vingegaard's entire 2026 season to a premature end.

Before the Tour, Vingegaard won Paris-Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and the Giro d'Italia. Victory in Italy made him only the eighth male rider in history to win all three Grand Tours.
