'It was a perfect season this year, but we'll see if we can improve' - Pogacar aims for more domination

Tadej Pogačar has declared his intention to build on his remarkable 2025 campaign next year, despite describing the current season as “perfect” during an interview with Marca.

"It was a perfect season this year, but we'll see if we can improve next year," Pogačar told MARCAas he competed in his final event of the year alongside Jonas Vingegaard, Primož Roglič and Isaac Del Toro. "We want the next one to be the same or even better, if possible. It's difficult to improve every year, but we're trying to do it for next season."

The 27-year-old Slovenian, who simply couldn’t stop winning during the 2025 cycling season, reflected positively on a year that saw him claim a dominant Tour de France victory, World Championship gold, European Championship success and Monument triumphs at the Tour of Flanders, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Il Lombardia, among a raft of other achievements.

“It’s been a positive season. Last year there were more victories, but this year we’ve added more Classics. The results have been good, and I think this season has been better than the previous one,” said the UAE Team Emirates leader.

The Andorra event marked the first time Pogačar had competed against Roglič, Vingegaard and Del Toro in the same race, creating a unique quartet of cycling’s biggest stars. “It’s a very good experience, racing against three of the best in the world. It’s a different format and a nice way to end the season for us,” Pogačar explained at the inaugural event.

When questioned about his 2026 calendar and whether La Vuelta might feature in his plans, Pogačar remained non-committal. “We haven’t talked about the calendar yet. Now my holidays start and I want to rest,” he said. “The World Championships are in Canada and fit well with the Canadian races, but there is still a long way to go to decide the calendar.”

His agent Alex Carera, who has represented Pogačar since 2016, believes the Slovenian’s potential remains limitless. “He can win five Tours, three World Championships, La Vuelta, surpass Cavendish’s record for victories in France and the record for Monuments – Roubaix and San Remo too, but it’s more difficult. Of course, with him everything is possible,” Carera told Marca.

Carera emphasised the importance of balance in Pogačar’s life, particularly his relationship with partner Urška Žigart. “To have a great season you have to have a great winter: train, rest, recover physically and mentally. Without that, there are no miracles. And that recovery also goes through Urška,” he explained.

Despite his phenomenal success, Pogačar remains humble when compared to cycling legends. When asked about Eddy Merckx and Spanish great Miguel Indurain, he responded: “They were all great champions in their time and still are. Great legends. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there at the time to watch them compete.”

The UAE Team Emirates star will now take a well-earned break before determining his targets for 2026 during upcoming team meetings in Abu Dhabi and at their Benidorm retreat.
