Italian region of Trentino to stage 2031 'Super' World Championships

The UCI has confirmed that the 2031 Super World Championships will be staged in the Italian region of Trentino, following a decision taken at this week’s UCI Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, during the ongoing 2025 Road World Championships.

It will mark the third edition of the Super World Championships, following the inaugural event in Glasgow in 2023 and the second in Haute-Savoie in 2027. Staged every four years, the Super World Championships bring together all cycling disciplines in a single global championship, including road, track, mountain bike, BMX, and para-cycling.

The last time Italy hosted the Road World Championships was in 2020 in Imola. Trentino’s appointment continues a long tradition, with 2031 set to be the fifteenth elite Worlds in Italy, making the country the outright leader ahead of Switzerland (11) and Belgium (11, Brussels 2030 included).

Local authorities have pledged more than €30 million to deliver the event. All competitions will be staged in Trentino itself, with the exception of the track events, which will take place in the velodrome of Spresiano near Treviso.

With Trentino awarded the 2031 Super Worlds, the UCI calendar is now locked in for the next six years.

In 2026 the peloton will return to Montréal, where the punishing slopes of Mount Royal once broke Eddy Merckx’s rivals. A year later, Haute-Savoie will revive the Domancy circuit, the same route where Bernard Hinault destroyed the field to win the 1980 World Championships. From there the Worlds move to Abu Dhabi in 2028, a sprinters’ stage on paper, though heat and wind may prove just as decisive.

Copenhagen follows in 2029, a sprinters’ city but one where crosswinds on certain days can also play a decisive role. In 2030 Brussels will blend Flemish cobbles with Walloon climbs in a bicentennial celebration of Belgian independence.

And as announced today, in 2031 the rainbow jersey will be contested in Trentino, a region of rich terrain, though the precise course remains to be revealed.
