'I've done everything I can to rediscover the joy and passion' - Tosh Van der Sande retires after 14 year career
Belgian rider Tosh Van der Sande has announced his retirement from professional cycling after 14 years in the peloton. The 34-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike domestique revealed his decision on Instagram, citing his body's signals that it was time to end his career.

"The past few years haven't been easy physically and mentally, but I've done everything I can to rediscover the joy and passion that made me fall in love with this sport in the first place. And I succeeded," Van der Sande wrote on Instagram. "But now my body has made it clear that it's time to stop." Van der Sande announced on Instagram.
The Belgian spent the majority of his career with Lotto, riding for the squad for ten years from 2012 to 2021 before joining the Dutch powerhouse Visma | Lease a Bike. Despite receiving a two-year contract extension with Visma in 2023, Van der Sande has opted to hang up his wheels.
Throughout his career, Van der Sande claimed two professional victories: a stage win in the 2016 Tour de l'Ain and another in the 2019 Tour de Wallonie.
Known primarily for his role as a valuable support rider, Van der Sande reflected positively on his time in the professional ranks: "I can only look back with immense pride on fourteen unforgettable years in which I performed at the highest level. I raced against and with the best riders in the world. I lived my dream, and I'm incredibly grateful for every moment."
In his retirement message, Van der Sande also offered advice to up-and-coming cyclists, emphasising the importance of balance in professional sports.
"A final message to the next generation of cyclists: live for your sport, but don't forget to live outside of it as well. Don't get lost in the numbers, the wattage, or the bike computer," he advised. "Cycling isn't just about data; it's also about instinct, courage and the love of cycling."
The Belgian concluded his announcement with gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey: "Thank you all for the support, the cheering, the fight, and the laughter. Time to shift gears in life."
