Jonas Vingegaard crashes on Málaga descent after being followed during training ride
Jonas Vingegaard was involved in a training crash near Málaga on Monday after an amateur rider followed him on a descent. The two time Tour de France winner suffered cuts and visible bleeding but escaped serious injury. The incident has reignited discussion around fans chasing professional riders during training for footage, selfies and online validation.

The story surfaced via a Strava upload from local rider Pedro García Fernández, who claimed he had been riding close behind Vingegaard shortly before the crash. In his account, Vingegaard lifted the speed on the downhill to create separation. “He was going down fast just to leave me behind and ended up on the ground,” Fernández wrote. In the comments beneath the activity, another rider said he saw Vingegaard afterwards with his face “bleeding in two places.”
Vingegaard’s Visma | Lease a Bike team confirmed the crash on Tuesday morning and moved quickly to reassure. “Jonas Vingegaard crashed during training on Monday. Fortunately, he is OK and did not sustain any serious injuries,” the team said in a statement shared online.
While the physical damage was limited, the team also used the moment to address the wider behaviour that led to the incident.
“In general, as a team we would like to urge fans on bikes to always put safety first. For both your own and others’ well being, please allow riders to train and give them as much space and peace as possible,” the statement continued.
Fernández later wrote that he stopped after the fall to check on Vingegaard, but sensed immediate frustration from the rider. “I then stopped to ask how he was, but he was angry because I tried to follow him,” he said. Several eyewitness accounts have echoed the basic sequence of events, though beyond the team’s reassurance, no further medical detail has been shared.
It is another sign that training rides are starting to look like moving content sets, especially in winter hotspots around southern Spain.
Vingegaard is set to open his season at the UAE Tour on February 16, kicking off a build toward an ambitious Giro and Tour double.
