Jonas Vingegaard starts Giro d’Italia with a painted nail for powerful cause
Jonas Vingegaard stood out at the start of the Giro d’Italia, and not just because of his status as one of the biggest names in the race. The Visma | Lease a Bike leader rolled out with one fingernail painted red, a small but deliberate gesture in support of a campaign against violence toward children.

His teammates joined him in the initiative, with the full Visma | Lease a Bike line up showing the same red nail before the opening stage. The action supports Børns Vilkår, a Danish organisation working to raise awareness around physical and psychological violence against children.
The campaign focuses on the message that too many children grow up in unsafe conditions. Vingegaard used the Giro spotlight to help bring attention to that issue.
“One in six children is mentally or physically abused,” Vingegaard explained. “We want to fight against that, because every child deserves to grow up in good conditions.”
The campaign has been backed by several well-known Danish figures, who have painted one fingernail red to draw attention to an issue far bigger than the gesture itself.
