Jordi Meeus explodes after sprint clash with Christophe Laporte at Gent-Wevelgem finish
Frustration boiled over for Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) after a chaotic sprint finale at In Flanders Fields. What looked like a textbook lead out turned into a lost opportunity in seconds, sparking a heated confrontation with Visma | Lease a Bike rider Christophe Laporte right after the line. The Belgian sprinter did not hold back.

The tension lingered long after In Flanders Fields from Middelkerke to Wevelgem, where Jordi Meeus saw his sprint opportunity slip away in dramatic fashion.
In the final straight, Meeus was perfectly positioned to launch his sprint, but a shoulder-to-shoulder clash with Christophe Laporte derailed his chances. Initial footage suggested that the Belgian unclipped for safety reasons after being forced toward the barriers.
However, new revelations from the team hotel of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe have added another layer to the incident.
It turns out Meeus had little choice: his pedal had actually broken during the collision.
“Yeah, there really wasn’t much left of it,” said team director Sven Vanthourenhout on Vive le Vélo, Leve de Ronde. “We’re just glad he stayed upright, but that’s a small consolation.”
The moment itself had already sparked controversy. As the pace surged in Wevelgem, Meeus and Laporte battled for the same narrow space. With the barriers closing in, Meeus was pushed wide and forced to stop pedaling just as the sprint opened up.
“What the f*ck, man!” Meeus shouted according to Sporza at Laporte immediately after crossing the finish line. The Belgian was visibly furious, gesturing animatedly as he confronted his rival. “You could at least brake a bit. You just pushed me into the barriers.”
Laporte attempted to defuse the situation but did not accept blame. According to the Frenchman, it was a typical high speed sprint incident. He suggested that Meeus could have eased off instead, framing it as a split second decision where both riders held their line.
For Jordi Meeus, it went beyond a flash of frustration as Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe had ridden a controlled race, saving their efforts and fully committing to their fast man.
Mick van Dijke confirmed the strategy afterwards to In de Leiderstrui. “The plan was to sprint with Jordi. For us it was about following, not riding. Everyone had to stay in their role.”
Meeus eventually crossed the line in 36th place, while Laporte stood on the podium in third.
Result: Gent-Wevelgem
