'Karma' - Lorena Wiebes reveals hate message after Track Worlds crash

Lorena Wiebes was denied a hat-trick of rainbow jersey at the Track World Championships by a crash in the Madison. The Dutchwoman revealed a hateful message she had received after the incident, an apparent continuation of the abuse she received after the Gravel World Championships.

Lorena Wiebes has revealed a hateful online message she received after she crashed heavily in the Madison at the Track World Championships in Santiago over the weekend. The Dutchwoman and Lisa van Belle were in contention for the rainbow jersey when their challenge was ended by a crash.

Wiebes later confirmed that she did not sustain serious injury in the crash, though she highlighted how she had been subject to online abuse following the incident.

“Luckily, I have a strong body and everything is okay under the circumstances,” Wiebes wrote on Instagram, before posting a screen grab of a message she had received under the caption “People are so nice these days!”

“Hopefully Wiebes has broken so much that she won't be able to take anything away from anyone for a while. The most unsportsmanlike sportswoman in existence. KARMA,” read the message to Wiebes.

The message appeared to reference Wiebes’ recent victory at the Gravel World Championships, where she sprinted to victory after her teammate Yara Kastelin shut down what looked to be the winning move from another Dutchwoman, Shirin van Anrooij.

Wiebes enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, claiming 25 wins on the road for SD Worx, including Milan-San Remo, Gent-Wevelgem and stages at the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France Femmes. She also claimed the points classification at the Tour and placed third at Paris-Roubaix.

On the track, Wiebes claimed gold in both the Omnium and the Scratch Race at the Santiago Worlds, but she was denied a hat-trick of rainbow jerseys by her crash in the Madison.

Last week, the Dutch cycling federation (KNWU) has already condemned the online abuse to which Wiebes and others had been subjected after the Gravel World Championships.

“We are shocked by the way some of our riders were personally approached via social media after the race,” read the KNWU statement. “We believe it is completely unacceptable that athletes who give their all and are proud are confronted with derogatory, insulting, or intimidating comments.”
