Lazkano breaks silence and denies doping allegations
Spanish cyclist Oier Lazkano has firmly rejected doping accusations following his provisional suspension by the UCI on October 30 over alleged biological passport anomalies. The Basque rider issued an official statement declaring his innocence and commitment to clean competition.

"I have never used doping substances or prohibited methods," Lazkano stated, defending his reputation in his first public response since the suspension announcement. "My career has been built on effort, dedication, honesty and daily work."
The Red Bull-BORA team rider emphasised he feels "oblivious to any illicit conduct" and confirmed he has assembled a medico-legal team to fight the allegations. His team will take "all the necessary actions" to demonstrate his integrity while following proper procedures.
Lazkano's suspension came after the UCI identified irregularities in his biological passport, a monitoring system that tracks various blood parameters over time to detect potential doping without direct positive tests, In the UCi's statement, it was stated clarified that the unexplained abnormalities occurred in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
"I trust in the truth and in sporting justice," the former Spanish champion added, showing determination to clear his name despite facing one of cycling's most serious accusations.
The case represents a significant challenge for Lazkano, who must now prepare to defend himself against technical biological evidence rather than a conventional positive test for a banned substance.
In his concluding remarks, Lazkano thanked supporters and promised continued action to protect his reputation. "I will continue, with determination and transparency, to defend my name and my professional dignity," he said.
Lazkano has been released from his 2025 team, Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe, with the German outfit stating, "We confirm that Oier Lazkano will no longer be part of our team. This follows the decision of the UCI to provisionally suspend him. The matter concerns the seasons 2022-2024 – a time before he joined our team.”
His former team, Movistar released a statement with them clarifying: “During the three seasons of contractual relationship with Mr. Lazkano (of the five to which the UCI study refers), all the controls to which he was subjected by the different national and international organizations, as well as internal to the team itself, yielded a negative result.”
If Lazkano's doping allegation is proven true, then three previous results will change, specifically the 2023 Boucles de la Mayenne, 2023 Spanish National Championship and the 2024 Clásica Jaén.
