Lorena Wiebes escapes serious injury after hit and run

Lorena Wiebes is recovering from a hit and run incident that abruptly interrupted her off season. The Dutch sprinter was out on a casual ride near her home in Limburg when she was struck from behind by a car whose driver fled the scene. She walked away with bruises and scratches, but her mountain e-bike was badly damaged.

Still processing the shock, Wiebes shared a message on social media directed at the driver who failed to stop. “For the person who hit me and didn’t stop, luckily I’m quite okay but this could be way worse, especially because I got hit from the back,” she wrote.

Where the motorist chose not to show any responsibility, two bystanders did. They stopped to check if she was safe, and Wiebes expressed her gratitude. “Thanks to the two persons who stopped to check I’m okay.”

The frustration of the SD Worx–Protime star extends beyond her own crash. “It’s even more frustrating when you see how many cyclists get killed by cars,” she wrote, pointing to a broader issue she feels is increasingly urgent.

The incident comes at the end of a standout 2025 campaign. The 26-years old Wiebes won 24 road races, including two stages in the Tour de France Femmes and the Giro d’Italia Women, claimed the Dutch national title and secured two world titles on the track in Santiago de Chile, before a heavy fall in the madison brought her championships to a painful end.

The aftermath of the crash also brought online abuse, adding to the emotional load of a long season.
