Mathieu van der Poel pulls off stunning save to avoid crash on the Molenberg
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad was packed with incidents, as crashes and mechanical problems repeatedly disrupted the race. The most spectacular moment so far came on the cobbled slopes of the Molenberg, where Mathieu van der Poel narrowly avoided going down in dramatic fashion.

Florian Vermeersch was the first of the main contenders to hit the climb, with Van der Poel following closely behind. Just as the pace ramped up, Rick Pluimers crashed from second position, sliding out directly in the path of the riders behind him.
Van der Poel appeared to have nowhere to go, but in a remarkable split second reaction he managed to stay upright. The Dutchman steered around the fallen rider at the very last moment, lifting his bike just enough to avoid contact in what quickly became one of the defining images of the day.
After that close call, Van der Poel immediately closed the small gap to Vermeersch on the cobbles and took over at the front. Over the top, Tim van Dijke bridged across to join them, and the trio began the chase towards the remaining breakaway riders as the race entered its decisive phase.
