Max Walscheid announces retirement to begin new career in performance and medicine

In a statement released on Friday, Lidl-Trek confirmed that the 33-year-old German has decided to call an end to his career at the end of the current campaign, and he will bow out at the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro.

Following his retirement, Walscheid will move into a new role at the CRIVIT Performance Centre in Bad Wimpfen alongside the Health and Performance Team.

In addition, he will continue his medical degree, which he resumed during the COVID-19 Pandemic, having initially put his studies on hold while he pursued a career in the peloton. 

“I believe sport has formed me and my character and I will never leave this part behind,” Walscheid said in an official statement released by Lidl-Trek. “So working in a high-performance environment with opportunities to test, to optimise – that’s something I find extremely interesting.”

Walscheid has spent 11 seasons as a professional, lining up in eight Grand Tours and 14 Monuments. During that time, the German claimed 14 individual victories and was also part of the winning German team in the mixed relay TTT at the World Championships in Leuven in 2021. 

2026 marks the one and only season of Walscheid racing in the colours of Lidl-Trek, having made the move across from Jayco AlUla. He was part of the Giro d’Italia squad in May and also finished 11th at Paris-Roubaix in the Spring. 

“Max only spent one year racing with Lidl-Trek, but he certainly made it count. He rode the best season of his career, and he was a great addition to the sprint train of Jonathan Milan, as well as supporting Mads on the cobbles,” Andy Schleck, Lidl-Trek CEO said.

Walscheid expressed his gratitude to the German team for their support and understanding during what was a difficult decision for him to make.

“When signing last year with the team, I communicated honestly that I can see the end of my chapter as a rider already on the horizon. Yet I was extremely motivated to make the absolutely most of it, as I‘ve always been,” he said.

“Instead of being critical, the team was very supportive and interested in me. First and foremost as a rider, but also beyond.”

Walscheid’s retirement comes at a time when several reports suggest that Lidl-Trek currently has more riders under contract for 2027 than it can register under UCI WorldTour rules, with Felix Gall, Gregor Mühlberger, Georg Zimmermann, Jordan Jegat, Igor Arrieta and Héctor Álvarez all confirmed to become part of the squad for 2027.
