Nine-time Grand Tour stage winner Cort confirms retirement at end of 2026

The 33-year-old Dane has enjoyed a successful career and will bow out from the professional ranks while still feeling that he is riding at 100%. His decision ultimately comes down to the fact that he feels ready to step away from the sacrifices it takes to compete in the peloton.

Magnus Cort will retire at the end of the 2026 season, bringing an end to an illustrious professional career on the road.

Uno-X Mobility confirmed on Saturday morning that Cort will retire at the end of the season, after spending three seasons with the Norwegian team and helping them rise to WorldTour level for 2026.

“I have enjoyed this team and the camaraderie. It is completely unique for a professional team. I have not experienced that before. I am happy to have been part of this journey,” Cort said in an official statement.

“The team has been on a longer journey, but my three years have been fantastic, from ProTeam to WorldTour, and really feeling that you have contributed to that," added Cort.

After riding as a stagiaire in late 2014, Cort joined the WorldTour with Orica-GreenEDGE for the 2015 season. The Dane would spend three full seasons with the Australian outfit before making the switch to Astana for 2018 and 2019. From there, Cort spent four seasons with EF Education-EasyPost before joining Uno-X Mobility in 2024.

To date, Cort has scored 35 professional victories on the road, nine of which are Grand Tour stage wins. In total, Cort has won six stages of the Vuelta a España across 2016, 2020 and 2021, two stages of the Tour de France in 2018 and 2022, and one stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2023.

No Dane has won more stages of the Vuelta than the six that Cort has. In addition, Cort sits third in the all-time rankings for most stage wins at a Grand Tour by a Dane, behind only Jonas Vingegaard (14) and Mads Pedersen (9).

Cort will bow out while still competitive at the highest level. This season saw the 33-year-old sprint to victory on stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya, and he is set to line up for his eighth and final Tour de France, which begins in Barcelona on July 4.

'You eventually start becoming ready to stop'

“I still feel that I am riding at 100%, but I have been in this for many years, and there is a lot you have to sacrifice to be part of it. You eventually start becoming ready to stop,” explained Cort in an official statement.

The Dane also hinted at the prospect that he may ride the Vuelta, which would take him to a milestone fifteenth career Grand Tour.

“I will do everything I can to get a few more good results. In the Tour de France, it would be absolutely fantastic to get a result, or to help Tobias [Johannessen] to a good result. I might also ride the Vuelta, and a Grand Tour win in my last season would make me leave professional cycling in the best way.”

Before the Tour starts next Saturday, Cort will line up for the Danish road race championships, with the team outlining that it will most likely be the final race of his professional career on home soil.
