Firefighters were called to the scene in Gruson, northern France, on Monday evening after flames took hold of the building. Images shared from the area showed thick smoke rising above the restaurant and suggested that the damage could be extensive.

Emergency services deployed a large number of crews and urged people to stay away from the area to allow firefighters and emergency vehicles clear access.

The restaurant was closed when the fire started and no one was inside, according to its owners.

In a statement published on Facebook, they thanked supporters for the messages they had received throughout the evening.

“We are deeply touched by the many messages of support, encouragement and solidarity,” they said.

The fire prompted an immediate reaction from cycling fans, many of whom know the restaurant as a landmark on the Paris-Roubaix course.

L’Arbre is located close to the Carrefour de l’Arbre, one of the final and most decisive cobbled sectors of the race. The stretch has often played a key role in shaping the outcome before the riders reach the Roubaix velodrome. This year, Tadej Pogačar and Wout van Aert went on the attack there, each trying to shake the other off on the punishing cobbles.

During Paris-Roubaix, the area attracts thousands of spectators and the restaurant has become a familiar meeting point for fans, teams, media and local residents.

Firefighters were still working at the scene on Monday evening, with the cause of the blaze yet to be confirmed. The owners have not disclosed the full extent of the damage or what the fire could mean for the restaurant’s future.
