Remco Evenepoel's trainer leaves Red Bull after Tour de France
Dan Lorang will leave Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe at the end of July after the Tour de France, bringing an end to a ten year spell that helped shape the team’s rise to the top of the sport and during which he was also tasked with guiding Remco Evenepoel in his development into a rider capable of challenging Tadej Pogačar.

The Luxembourger, 46, has been one of the key figures behind the team’s performance structure since joining as its first Performance Coach in 2017. In recent months, he also took on a role within the Red Bull Athlete Performance Centre, further embedding himself in the wider high-performance setup.
Team CEO Ralph Denk praised Lorang’s impact but acknowledged the decision to move on.
“Dan has played a key role in our development and success at WorldTour level. While I regret his decision, I respect his desire for a new challenge. This openness and fairness have always defined our partnership. I wish Dan all the very best for his future beyond coaching and outside our organisation.” Denk said.
Lorang’s departure comes at a time when the team is entering a new phase, having recently brought in Remco Evenepoel as the centrepiece of its ambitions.
When the Belgian joined forces with Lorang, he was appointed as one of the key figures to close the gap to Tadej Pogačar.
In December, Evenepoel expressed his satisfaction with starting to work alongside Lorang: “It was quite a big change, I think everything is going well for the moment. The biggest difference is that we are starting with some efforts already in the second week, especially the third week, whereas before, I used to ride for a month, just riding. But now, we try to open the volume straight away.”
Lorang and Evenepoel had already identified areas for improvement at the European Championships, based on Evenepoel’s own observations of Pogačar:
“He [Pogačar] starts his attack at a slightly lower cadence, then suddenly increases it to an incredibly high rhythm. It is a power effort that he executes perfectly. Really impressive to watch.”
That insight later shaped a training approach built around higher intensity and more race specific efforts. From early in the winter, the focus shifted towards more demanding sessions designed to improve his aerobic ceiling and, in particular, his ability to deal with repeated surges and sharp accelerations on climbs against Pogačar.
It also came up again after his early season wins in Mallorca, when Evenepoel was asked how he could continue to improve.
“Fortunately, I'm not a coach, and I don't have to decide that. That's work for Dan (Lorang) and co,” Evenepoel said. “But generally speaking, I will continue working at high intensity, which I will automatically gain in the upcoming races, and with changes in pace: attacking and maintaining that effort.”
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe have not yet announced how they will compensate for the loss of Dan Lorang or who will take over the role of training Remco Evenepoel.
