Remco Evenepoel hints at Paris-Roubaix debut after strong Tour of Flanders ride

Remco Evenepoel has emerged from his Tour of Flanders debut with more than just a podium finish. The Belgian rider has also sparked fresh speculation about a possible other late addition to his spring calendar: Paris-Roubaix.

After finishing third in Tour of Flanders behind Tadej PogaÄŤar and Mathieu van der Poel, Evenepoel acknowledged that his experience on the cobbles has shifted his perspective. Rather than ruling out Roubaix, he suggested the idea remains on the table, albeit loosely.

“It’s not something that has been decided,” he said to Sporza. “There hasn’t been a real discussion yet, but it’s not impossible either.”

He added that the idea has already been discussed within the peloton, including in a conversation with Mathieu van der Poel. “Mathieu brought it up to me as well,” Evenepoel said with a smile.

Evenepoel’s performance in Flanders marked a significant moment in his development. Known primarily for his dominance in stage races, hilly one-day races and time trials, he proved he can hold his own on cobbled terrain.

That showing has naturally led to questions about whether he could take on Roubaix, a race that places even greater emphasis on resilience over rough surfaces.

While intrigued, Evenepoel made clear that the final call will depend on broader team considerations. “There are more people involved in that decision,” he noted. “I might be open to it, but that doesn’t mean it will happen.”

The 26-year-old also appeared wary of fueling speculation too early. In recent weeks, pre race messaging around his schedule has not always matched the eventual outcome, something he referenced with a hint of humor.

“We’ve created enough confusion already,” he said. “So I’d rather not say too much now.”

Looking beyond Roubaix, Evenepoel also signaled growing interest in Milan-Sanremo, a race he skipped this year after a late decision.

With increasingly aggressive finales in recent editions, he believes the race could suit his profile.

“If the race continues to open up like that, it becomes much more interesting for riders like me,” he said, pointing to the ability of versatile riders such as Tom Pidcock to stay in contention deep into the finale.

Teammate Mick van Dijke also did not rule out a surprise appearance by Remco Evenepoel at Paris-Roubaix next week, speaking to WielerFlits.

Asked whether the team would fully back him and his brother Tim van Dijke in Roubaix, Van Dijke left the door open. “If everything goes as planned, then yes,” he said. “But you never know… maybe Remco still has a surprise up his sleeve. We’ll see.”
