Evenepoel arrived in Montréal as one of the main favourites following his victory at the GP Québec two days earlier. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leader was unable to repeat that performance, eventually finishing fifth, but one incident on the penultimate ascent of Mont Royal drew plenty of attention.

Lidl Trek had moved to the front as the race approached one of its decisive moments. After completing his turn on the front, Skujiņš began to drift backwards on the side of the road.

At almost exactly the same moment, his teammate Simmons accelerated away from the group on the other side.

Evenepoel was positioned directly behind Skujiņš and suddenly found his path blocked by the Latvian rider. The Belgian was forced to brake and made his frustration clear immediately, both verbally and with an angry gesture as he passed.

Skujiņš responded, although the experienced Latvian appeared largely unfazed by the exchange.

The incident briefly left Evenepoel out of position, but he managed to recover before the decisive final lap. On the last ascent of Mont Royal, however, he was unable to follow the strongest moves when Paul Seixas and Isaac del Toro went clear.Evenepoel crossed the finish line in fifth place.
