'Remco's not happy with second' - Van Gils welcomes Evenepoel's mindset at Red Bull
Belgian cyclist Maxim Van Gils has revealed he underwent nose surgery following a disastrous 2025 season that saw him plummet from 14th to 180th in the UCI World Ranking during his first year with Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.

"It wasn't the easiest season," Van Gils understated to Sporza when reflecting on a year plagued by illness and injuries that derailed his campaign after a promising start that included a stage win at Ruta del Sol along with a stage at the Tour of Norway
The 25-year-old's troubles began during his first winter training camp with his new team due to a late transfer that saw him absent from the planning meetings at the end of 2024. "I had missed the team days, so I didn't know everyone on that first training camp. That was a bit difficult and I needed an adjustment period," said Van Gils, who later underwent nasal surgery.
"They took a piece out of my nose. That will help me move forward next season. In the meantime, I also know the team. I think and hope that it will go better next year."
Looking ahead to 2026, Van Gils has clear objectives: "I want to be good from the start and perform consistently. I also want to ride a Grand Tour."
Van Gils will be aiming to go one better than his best result in a Grand Tour stage in 2026 with his best stage result coming on Stage 13 of the 2023 Tour de France atop of the winding Grand Colombier, second behind the victor, Michał Kwiatkowski from the days breakaway.
The Belgian also welcomed compatriot Remco Evenepoel to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, expressing confidence that the team can help the Grand Tour winner, multiple world champion, Monument winner and Olympic time trial champion reach new heights.
"We can field a very strong team in all races, so Remco will always be very well surrounded," Van Gils assured. "It's always nice to go to a race with Remco, because then you have a better chance of winning the race as a team. Remco is a winner and is not happy with a second place. That makes him a fantastic rider."
